چکیده

Context. The Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf spheroidal galaxy is currently being disrupted under the strain of the Milky Way. A reliable reconstruction of Sgr star formation history can only be obtained by combining core and stream information. Aims. We present radial velocities for 67 stars belonging to the Sgr Stream. For 12 stars in the sample we also present iron (Fe) and α-element (Mg, Ca) abundances. Methods. Spectra were secured using different high resolution facilities: UVES@VLT, [email protected], and SARG@TNG. Radial velocities are obtained through cross correlation with a template spectra. Concerning chemical analysis, for the various elements, selected line equivalent widths were measured and abundances computed using the WIDTH code and ATLAS model atmospheres. Results. The velocity dispersion of the trailing tail is found to be σ=8.3±0.9 km s −1 , i.e., significantly lower than in the core of the Sgr galaxy and marginally lower than previous estimates in the same portion of the stream. Stream stars follow the same trend as Sgr main body stars in the [α/Fe] vs [Fe/H] plane. However, stars are, on average, more metal poor in the stream than in the main body. This effect is slightly stronger in stars belonging to more ancient wraps of the stream, according to currently accepted models of Sgr disruption. Send offprint requests to: L. Also based on spectroscopic observations taken at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, operated by the Fundación G. Galilei of INAF at the Spanish Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos of the IAC (La Palma, Spain).

The photometric study of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy by Marconi et al (1998) has suggested the presence of a spread in metal-licity (-0.7≤ [Fe/H] ≤-1.6) , which may result from different bursts of star formation. We present the results from a Multi Object Slit spec-troscopy program carried out at the NTT with the aim to determine spectroscopic abundances of Sagittarius giants selected from the...

Chemical abundances of RGB-Tip stars in the Sagittarius dwarf Spheroidal galaxy

We present preliminary iron abundances and α element (Ca, Mg) abundance ratios for a sample of 22 Red Giant Branch (RGB) Stars in the Sagittarius galaxy (Sgr), selected near the RGB-Tip. The sample is representative of the Sgr dominant population. The mean iron abundance is [Fe/H]=-0.49. The α element abundance ratios are slightly subsolar, in agreement with the results recently prensented by [...

Abundances in Sagittarius: present state and perspectives for the use of VLT

Sagittarius, the nearest external galaxy, will be amenable to detailed abundance studies with VLT and other 8m class telescopes. Such data, in conjuction with the similar data of our own galaxy, will allow a deeper understanding of chemical evolution. Our study conducted with NTT shows the presence of metal-rich stars with radial velocities compatible with Sagittarius membership and of stars as...

The 2mass Color-magnitude Diagram of the Center of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy: Photometric Measurements of a Surprisingly High Mean Metallicity

We present the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) (J−K, K) color-magnitude diagram for the region within 1◦ of the center of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Using the slope of the red giant branch (RGB), we determine a mean metallicity for the main stellar population of [Fe/H] = −0.5 ±0.2. The Sagittarius RGB possesses a blue tail that overlaps with the foreground Milky Way giant branch...

The SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline . III . Comparison with High - Resolution Spectroscopy of SDSS / SEGUE Field Stars

We report high-resolution spectroscopy of 125 field stars previously observed as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and its program for Galactic studies, the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). These spectra are used to measure radial velocities and to derive atmospheric parameters, which we compare with those reported by the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (S...
